And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.” Matthew 8:20
Souls that desire to reach perfect union with God must journey with him and model our lives on his. First, beyond any doubt, his entire life was complete self-denial interiorly and exteriorly as he says in Matthew 8:20 he had nowhere to lay his head. Second, in death, his soul was annihilated in sorrow as he felt the darkness of soul that made Him cry out, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?”Mt 27:46
It was in this moment of utter abandonment that Jesus brought about the redemption of man he united humanity to God.
What are we to understand from this. I believe that the soul who desires to reach the heights of sanctity must die to all that is of this world. We must allow ourselves to be reduced to nothingness by the gift of humility and eat the fruit of obedience. Nothing less than a living death on the cross. To carry the marks of Jesus crucified is what souls who want to belong to God must desire.
This may seem radical, however, this is the mystery of the Cross. This is the way the saints have taken. It is the way we must walk if we long to drink the cup like the apostles. “Are you able to drink from the chalice that I am to drink? , Mt 20:22
Remember dear souls those beautiful loving words that Jesus spoke to us, ” My yoke is sweet and my burden is light’ Mt 11:30
